Nvidia RTX 4090: Everything we know about Nvidia's next generation of graphics card (Release Date)

What can we anticipate from the allegedly upcoming Nvidia RTX 4090?

One of the most eagerly awaited graphics card introductions in recent memory is the Nvidia RTX 4090, because to reports about the processing capability (and power requirements) of the next-generation BFGPU that have gamers all over the world drooling.

Even though the slightly more powerful Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti is currently Nvidia's standard-bearer, we'd still argue that the current-generation Nvidia RTX 3090 is the best graphics card available in terms of performance to price. The RTX 3090 was one of the most impressive graphics cards we'd ever seen when it launched (though it does really push the limit of what an acceptable price point for even a premium graphics card is).

Quite frankly, the release of the RTX 4090, which is anticipated to represent a significant improvement over even the RTX 3090 Ti, will be one of the most significant events of the year because it will give us our first official look at Nvidia Lovelace, the company's new consumer graphics card architecture.

Lovelace, the successor to Nvidia Ampere, was initially believed to be more of a mid-cycle refresh than a full-on architectural leap, but there are many rumors circulating that Nvidia has changed its mind and is now aiming for an architecture overhaul, which makes the launch of the RTX 4090 even more exciting.

However, Nvidia has kept most of this a secret, so we don't really know anything for sure. Nevertheless, we've compiled all the information we've learned about the Nvidia RTX 4090 in order to keep you informed of the most recent rumors, hypotheses, and analyses regarding the upcoming iteration of Nvidia's top graphics chip.

Nvidia RTX 4090: Cut to the chase

  • What is it? Nvidia's next flagship graphics card
  • When will it be available? It might launch as soon as August 2022
  • What will it cost? Given inflation, likely slightly higher than the RTX 3090

The Nvidia A100 GPU, the first Ampere GPU to be released, was presented in May 2020 to aid programmers and researchers working on COVID 19 research (among other things), but it was a platform for data centers and cloud computing, not a consumer GPU.
Several months after the Nvidia RTX 3080 released, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 followed on September 17 and September 24, respectively. On October 28, 2020, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 was made available.
This time, we anticipate the Nvidia RTX 4090 to debut first, maybe as early as August 2022. The RTX 4080 and the RTX 4070 should then follow in September and October, respectively.

Nvidia RTX 4090: Price

The pricing of the Nvidia RTX 4090 is now a huge uncertainty. The RTX 3090 was initially priced at $1,499 (£1,399, AU$2,100) for the Nvidia Founder's Edition. Other AIB partners then added extra features like bigger fans or RGB accents that increased the price even more.
That was only the MSRP, though. However, when it came to the actual paid price, these prices were frequently much higher than the MSRP as a result of a combination of inflationary supply chain shortages and the high demand for next-generation graphics cards, which encouraged profiteers to use swarms of bots to scoop up available stock and resell it online at exorbitant prices.
Then there were the bitcoin mining businesses, who would purchase entire warehouses of graphics cards that gamers would have otherwise purchased.
As a result of everything said, the RTX 3090 sold for far more than anybody had anticipated. Will the RTX 4090's history serve as its future? Sincerably, it's difficult to say. There is little doubt that the RTX 4090 will be a highly costly graphics card, but it is still unknown how much of the perfect storm surrounding the RTX 3090 will still be there to influence the pricing of the RTX 4090.
Since high-end graphics cards have become less popular among cryptominers due to the recent collapse in cryptocurrency prices, there is less upward pressure on pricing. Even if the chip scarcity is still a major issue, it occurred shortly before the debuts of Ampere and AMD RDNA 2, thus those graphics card lineups weren't ready for the chip shortage in 2020 and 2021.
But by 2022, the chip scarcity has already been partially anticipated. In a manner that it couldn't previously with the RTX 3090, Nvidia has had time to prepare for the chip problem since it has known what it looks like in advance.
There isn't much anyone can do to stop people from taking advantage of others for financial gain, but this time around there will probably be a lot more inventory available, making it much less profitable to try to buy up thousands of dollars' worth of graphics cards in the hopes of reselling them at a 50% premium (or more).
All of this suggests that the general inflationary atmosphere we're in will result in a more moderate price increase. It is uncertain, but it would be great if Nvidia maintained the RTX 4090's pricing in line with the RTX 3090.

Nvidia RTX 4090: Specs

All of the information concerning the RTX 4090's specifications is speculative rather than factual because we don't have any official information about it.
What we can predict is that this graphics card will almost probably be a beast, and we don't just mean in terms of frames per second. Given how much power it is predicted to need, if the rumors are accurate, this may just as well be dubbed the Nvidia Tarrasque (opens in new tab).
This component alone may be the most power-hungry consumer PC component ever with a TGP (Total Graphics Power) of 600W. Not just low-cost systems, though; some of the greatest gaming PCs available can be operated with this amount of power.
If the Nvidia RTX 4090 is as potent as some are saying it is, and is up to three times as fast as the RTX 3090, then such high power consumption only makes sense.
To be clear, the RTX 3090 is capable of running Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K on the highest ray-traced settings with DLSS off and achieving frame rates of up to 30, which is still playable if not optimal. With DLSS enabled, it is the only graphics card that has a possibility of reaching 60 frames per second at those settings, peaking at 52 frames per second, second only to the RTX 3090 Ti's 57 maximum frames per second.
The RTX 4090 (with DLSS enabled) could easily exceed 60 frames per second and, if these reports are accurate, may potentially approach 80 frames per second. However, just because a graphics card is twice as fast doesn't always imply that your frame rate will increase by a factor of two in any specific game. That is some serious gaming performance, and it is what we would anticipate if the RTX 3090's TGP, which is 350W, were virtually doubled.
The number of cores and clock rates will probably become more public as the launch approaches, but for now, it should go without saying that this will be the year's largest graphics card launch.
